Bees in a Hive
There is typically only one queen in a hive
A queen can live for two to five years
The queen can produce as many as 1,000 to 2,000 eggs a day
During the busy summer months an average hive may have 40,000 workers.
Large hives can have as many as 60,000 workers
Workers can fly up to four mile to find nectar and pollen
They can potentially cover a radius of 50 square miles.
Workers live a dangerous life, summer bees have a life expectancy of around six weeks. Fall bees have a life expectancy up to six months.
A hive may have as many as 1,000 drones in spring and summer. Few to none in the fall and winter.
In cold climates, once the weather cools, all the drones are expelled from the hive. In our warmer climate some drones may remain.
