Full Depth vs Half Depth Boxes
Typically there are two sizes of boxes.
Boxes are sized to hold either eight or ten frames.
Most beekeepers use full depth boxes and frames for their brood boxes and medium depth boxes and frames for their honey boxes.
Full depth box and frames
Used as the brood box
Are typically 9 5/8" deep
Each full depth frame with honey weighs around 5 lbs
50 lbs for a full box
Medium box and frames
Used as honey boxes
Are typically 6 5/8 deep
Each half depth frame with honey weighs around 4 lbs
40 lbs for a full box

You can paint your hive any color you want. Bees really don't care.
