2.1 MPEG Layer-3 Encoding
The sound file optimization process described in the previous chapter relies on MPEG Layer-3 file encoding.

  1. MPEG is the acronym for Moving Picture Experts Group.

  1. MPEG has developed compression systems used for video data. For example, DVD movies, HDTV broadcasts and DSS satellite systems use MPEG compression to fit video and movie data into smaller spaces.

  1. The MPEG compression system includes a subsystem to compress sound, called MPEG audio Layer-3. We know it by its abbreviation - MP3.

  1. The previous chapter showed how to compress a .WAV sound file into an MP3 file, while leaving the file extension as a .WAV
